Paddy & Scott’s Coffee Company Brew a Bold New Approach to Recruitment

Independent coffee company Paddy & Scott’s are not afraid to challenge the status quo and think differently – a sentiment that is especially true when it comes to their approach to recruitment.
Driven by a strong belief that the foundation of a successful company rests on great people thriving in roles they genuinely enjoy and excel at, Paddy & Scott’s have created a truly remarkable recruitment ethos. After all, how many people leave jobs because their roles become stagnant or unfulfilling?
Rather than waiting for a position to open up and enduring the occasional slow period to find the right candidate, the company keeps an eye out year-round for exceptional individuals whose values align with their manifesto.
When Rebecca Shepherd first joined Paddy & Scott’s as General Cafés Manager in September 2023, the entire team quickly realised she was destined for much more than the role she had applied for. With her infectious energy and radiant smile, it was plain to see that “Becks” would become an invaluable asset to the Paddy & Scott’s family.
Fast forward 15 months, and Rebecca’s list of achievements is as boundless as her passion. From inspiring her teams, revitalising Ambition House Café for events, to creating a cosy, welcoming hub for the local community, her contributions have been nothing short of exceptional.
One particular highlight has been Paddy & Scott’s partnership with Acycle (African and Caribbean Youth Creative Learning Experience). This inspiring organisation runs after-school workshops at The University of Suffolk, aiming to boost confidence, self-esteem, identity, and academic attainment in children aged 5–11 from Black and Dual-Heritage backgrounds. On Wednesdays, parents pay £1.00, and in return, “Becks” and her team provide hot and cold nutritious meals. For some children, this may be the only hot meal they receive that day.
On 1st December 2024, Rebecca was officially appointed Head of People at Paddy & Scott’s. This well-deserved position recognises her talent, dedication, and the esteem in which the entire team holds her. This role sits alongside her position as General Café Manager.
Rebecca Shepherd reflects: “Being appointed as Head of People this year was an incredible honour and definitely a personal highlight! It’s been an exciting and thrilling journey at Paddy & Scott’s, filled with growth and new challenges!”
Jon Reed, CEO at Paddy & Scott’s, adds: “While other companies our size and larger tend to recruit externally for HR roles, we prefer to give individuals like Becks the opportunity to showcase their superpowers. Playing a part in developing talented people is truly humbling.”
Paddy & Scott’s is far from your average coffee company. They passionately believe that a humble cup of coffee can make a significant impact, empowering coffee farmers and their communities from the very start. By working together, they create a ripple effect that stretches far beyond Suffolk, reaching deep into Kenyan communities to foster education and nurture dreams.
